Elisabeth Gilbert’s talk at this year’s TED conference.
How so? Well, microblogging removed superfluous technology from blogging. Much like a high signal-to-noise ratio, microblogging removed applications and algorithms that got in the way of human interaction.
Twitter.COM is focused on individuals - and more and more people are finding that problematical (i.e., placing too much emphasis on people and/or personal profiles and/or egos).
In contrast, 8-D focuses attention on topics and/or spheres of activity (such as “networking”, “organisations”, “business” or “commerce”). In other words: 8-D brings people togeher + promotes collaboration, rather than separating people from each other by compartmentalizing each person into an individual profile… — so with 8-D, there is no need to approve “friends” and/or block “non-friends”: All participants who share the same topics share the same topical space.
In future iterations, we’re planning to add features to allow the participating communities to evaluate and prioritize goals, goal setting and planning.
Feedback on these ideas + plans are appreciated!

Twitter created a new stardard of conversation - not microblogging, but rather is completely destroyed the segregation of blog post space as “follow-space” vs. blog comment space as “nofollow-space”. Twitter was “one-space” — a level-playing-field community.
This may not always remain the case. Last year, profile URL links were moved into “nofollow-space”. Recently, Twitter has introduced sponsored links (note: although the fact that these sponsored links are neither identified as paid advertising nor are labeled with the “nofollow” tag [in other words: it appears as though these links violate Google’s webmaster guidelines regarding “paid links”], there is no indication that Twitter will be removed from Google’s index for this violation). And just the other day twitter announced that they will be rolling out “premium accounts”.
Maybe not.
At 8-D.US the approach is a little different. Here, community is not defined by becomig a fan of a celebrity (in other words: “following” people). Instead, the entire space is a level playing field, and it is segmented into 8 categories (or “dimensions”) — for example “business, “organisations” or “general chat”. And everybody can take part in any space they feel is relevant to their topic.
Maybe not. Then again: maybe yes!

Popup New Window ( or play in frameset below : )
Actually, my question included “why?” (trying to get a “2-for-1″ deal ;)
Do the people who work at digg have to be in a specific geographic location — and if so, why?
I guess if he had answered that, the interview might have gone 3 hours instead of just 3 minutes….

Well, it’s not that difficult IMHO. First of all, there was definitely irrational overinvestment in real estate, and that also brought in the banks, and then the banks brought in the rest of the economy. But that’s not all of it…
– and the Internet is destroying big companies. It has pretty much destroyed big media, and it is also in the process of destroying big financial institutions. Perhaps it will destroy big everything (Wal-Mart?). Some companies are trying to bring their big companies to the Internet, rather than letting startups “take over” — but this is, perhaps misguided.
Small is beautiful — brought to you by the Internet. This reminds me of two visionaries who described this precess very well years ago… I think maybe I’ll take another peek at sohodojo.com!

Men twitter. Women twitter. Kids twitter. Cats and dogs twitter — hey, does Fonzi twitter? And what about the shark?
Twitter’s growth was in part due to the fact that Google had become useless — it is no longer possible to find reliable information on Google (unless you happen to be searching for youtube.com videos or blogspot.com spam ;) … but twitter.com seems to be following in its’ predecessor’s footsteps: trying to be a one-size fits-all platform.
Let’s say you could create the Internet all over. How many websites would you need? Or want? 10? 100? 1000? A million?!?
Let’s say you were “allowed” to designate up to 1 dozen categories of websites — how many would you have, and which categories would you create? Videos? Stories? Clubs? Games? …?

I have no idea what about — maybe it should be an “unconference”?
I know the “hallway chit chat” could take place on twitter.com (and/or something like twitter.com ;) — but what about other (more “open space” and/or conference oriented apps?

One quick and easy “solution” would be to pay people to pump gas. Hmmmm….
We should build the world — not the world we want, but rather: the world our children want!
Here are some poetic words of inspiration:
May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

Air is social. Oil is social. Gas is social. As we speak, there are people trying to promote privacy with respect to gas.
Markets are communities. Languages are communities. The expressions expressed are conversations
Contracts. Fairness. Rules of conduct — not enforced, but rather agreed upon (much like “grammatical” rules, which are open to evolve). The foundation should not be written in stone or in a static document that becomes outdated before the ink dries. The most promising basis for our survival is unanimity — our goal should be consensus. In other words: We Can Be Together.
I recommend you pick up a copy of E.F. Schumacher’s “Small is Beautiful” (see e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.F._Schumacher). If you’ve already read it, then I think we would tend to agree that the questions we have to address are not so much the minor details, but rather the general direction.
I see it rather simply: We can save energy by utilizing information. We should use information in every way imaginible to reduce the amount of energy wasted. We will be producing more by wasting less.
We should keep track of the energy used on Earth. Annual energy usage, quarterly, monthly, weekly, daily — even up to the minute. This is information. Did we save energy or not? Anyone who uses a car for trips under 1 mile should be required to enter a rehab clinic. This would increase productivity — jobs would be created, and it would improve our (everyone’s) environment. Traveling more than 1 mile per day should be the exception — not the rule. Wherever possible, people should be employed to do jobs — for example: jobs that support clean air.

Members of online communities must share something — what are the most basic shared elements?
If the members do not speak the same language, then communication within the community will be hampered — and perhaps it will simply not work at all.
Here are some thoughts & ideas to get the juices flowing:
Note, however, that without a concerted effort to contribute and/or participate towards a shared outcome, there is little need to collaborate. Community is not so much about you or me: it must be about us — our relationships and our shared present which shapes our common future … our real world, our real life, our shared lives, our living, live community — the one that makes us feel alive!
